In this otherwise tranquil scene at Gunwharf Quays in Portsmouth, the smoke stain on the fourth floor of The Roundhouse betrays the drama of three days earlier. A serious fire broke out early in the afternoon of 25 February but, fortunately, no-one was seriously hurt. On the 28th, the Tesco Extra on the ground floor was still closed.

Man and Ball - 9 January 2015

'Man and Ball' (1995) by Giles Penny, bronze.
This sculpture makes an intriguing sight in the residential area of Gunwharf Quays, Portsmouth. If the proximity of the Please Keep off the Grass signs is as amusing as it is annoying, the real irony is on a sign out of shot to the right exhorting 'No Ball Games'.

The name of Fuller's pub The Old Customs House in Gunwharf Quays, Portsmouth accurately reveals the early history of this attractive building, now Grade 1 listed. It was later the Administrative Block of HMS Vernon.

The now extensive development of Gunwharf Quays occupies the former site of HMS Vernon and there are some interesting relics of the naval base amongst the residential and commercial property. This view towards Anson Court features the original South gate which frames the Spinnaker Tower.

So late in life, I am discovering more about Portsmouth and the other places I visit all the time. This 'street' sign is in the main shopping part of Gunwharf Quays, Portsmouth.
