33002 'Sea King' at Buckfastleigh - 27 May 2021

Class 33 33002 'Sea King' at Buckfastleigh, South Devon Railway. One of the SDR's best cared for locomotives, I first photographed it in the same location in 2010 when it was in a different livery. TZ70_2_P1000061E

33116 + VSOE at Havant (1) - 26 March 1986

21 Apr 2020 89
During my lockdown scanning marathon, I am editing and posting pictures the equivalent of which would not today meet my required standards. I'd be the first to admit that the quality of some leaves a lot to be desired but I hope that my followers might forgive me for, if nothing else, the subject matter. My notes from 26 March 1986 record that I travelled from Waterloo to Havant and noted the VSOE stock at the London terminus before my own departure. The buffet attendant (on the train, I assume) informed me that the stock was bound for Portsmouth 12 minutes behind my service train. I photographed the special train at Havant. 33116, the locomotive in this photograph, was at Woking mid-afternoon on my return journey. The VSOE set was due to leave Portsmouth Harbour at 1658 so I presume that it was hauled by a different locomotive. Also of historical note in this picture, are the fast through tracks which were, shortsightedly, lifted many years ago. 860504_260386E

South Bermondsey Crompton - 14 March 1986

21 Apr 2020 67
In a view taken from, I assume, the island platform of South Bermondsey station, 33040 is seen passing nearby. Locomotive hauled stock in south east London would have been fairly uncommon so any thoughts on what the movement might have been would be welcome. Geotagging approximate. 860219_140386E

Great Central Railway (56) - 6 December 2018

09 Dec 2018 55
More than four years after my last visit to the Great Central Railway, it was worth braving persistent rain to provide an updated document of the state of preservation at Loughborough Central. The hard work done there is evident although Class 33 D6535 was looking a little weathered. 200_3_P1080979CE

West Somerset Railway (8) - 6 June 2016

For someone who was not brought up with steam by virtue of geography rather than my date of birth, diesel preservation is of great interest. The standard of preservation on the West Somerset Railway is very high and is exemplified here, at Williton, by Class 33 D6575, Class 47 D1661 'North Star', Western Class D1010 'Western Fusilier' and (right) Class 14 D9526. 200_2_P1100930

A view of Williton Diesel Depot with guest gulls features four beautifully preserved locomotives. From camera, Western Class D1010 'Western Fusilier', Class 47 D1661 'North Star', Class 33 D6575 and the beautiful Warship Class D832 'Onslaught'. 200_2_P1100918

Great Central Railway (27) - 15 July 2014

I have a natural affection for Class 33, a staple of my boyhood Southern Region, especially when I was able to venture as far as Eastleigh. D6535 looked in pretty good condition at Loughborough. 200_P1040661

This is the scene which greeted me at platform level at Loughborough Central, Great Central Railway. In shot (from camera) are Class 33 D6535, Deltic D9016 'Gordon Highlander', Class 27 5401, Class 47 D1705 'Sparrowhawk' and Class 45 45041 'Royal Tank Regiment'. In the distance, on the left is another Class 45 D123. 200_P1040626

33029 'Glen Loy' at Eastleigh (2) - 24 October 201…

25 Oct 2013 1 135
The limited access and sight lines at Eastleigh mean that I am prepared to take awkward shots to record the ever changing scene there. Class 33 is already 50 years old and has worn numerous liveries. Here 33029 'Glen Loy', in the relatively recent West Coast Railways scheme, is seen at a site where the type was once common. P1180974
