The Eastleigh of Today - 2 April 2021

One never really knows what a visit to Eastleigh will bring and it is by no means always possible to take even a half decent photograph. The intrusion of the unwelcome 2020 fence makes this picture no more than half decent. There is an enormous amount of stock there and in great variety but it can look very jumbled with the one thing one really wanted to see, in this case Class 484, well hidden away or even absent.
Nevertheless, much though I dislike the Network Rail yellow on anything, I really do like Class 313. That Class 08 shunter 08567, still in EWS colour is next to it, pretty much sums up the Eastleigh of today.

DB Cargo UK Class 92 92011 'Handel' at Dollands Moor.
Normally, this type of picture would not make it on to my photostream but it has come out so clearly from one of the few available angles and in spite of the obstructions that I wanted to post it. The survival of the Railfreight Grey livery and full height EWS vinyls is remarkable.

Another scene at Loughborough with my favourite compositional elements. Two water towers and semaphores fill the frame with EWS Class 08 08694 shunting mixed goods.

This is probably my least successful photograph of the day. Amongst my many obsessions, I agonise over verticals (and horizontals) and this did not on first, second and third viewings, look right. However, there are several correct verticals in this general view of Loughborough featuring EWS Class 08 shunting mixed goods, two water towers (if you look closely) and semaphores.

I am probably never going to match some of my online contacts for composition but I am occasionally pleased with the results of a long shoot and an even longer edit. Selected from a series of similar shots, this shows EWS Class 08 08694 shunting mixed goods at Loughborough with a fine selection of semaphores included.

I like water towers in my photographs. They make an attractive subject as part of composition and can provide an element of framing. Their height, however, makes composition overall more difficult. I was eventually satisfied with this picture of EWS Class 08 08694 shunting mixed goods at Loughborough. (I imagine it might have been withdrawn before the takeover by DB Schenker). Semaphores are always a welcome part of any railway scene.
