There are numerous interesting buildings in Alton, Hampshire and this is one of the most interesting. I cannot be absolutely certain that this is the original building indicated by the blue plaque which, after all, only says 'Site of' but it does appear to be of the correct period. Henry Austen set up three banks of which this, Austen, Gray and Vincent, was the first. The others, with different partners, were in Petersfield and London. Austen Collage

This magnificent building in Alton, Hampshire is believed to date from 1501 and houses, appropriately, Macallan Penfold Architects Ltd. The official address is 23b High Street but access is from Weyside Walk from where this picture was taken. It is interesting to see the River Wey in this location where it is little more than a stream. 200_3_P1000714R
