St Mary's is a small island at the north end of Whitley Bay which is connected to the mainland by a tidal causeway. There is a small visitor centre on the island which offers guided tours of the lighthouse. A particular highlight is watching the seals around the island. Just be sure to check the tides before visiting!

A large swell breaking around Roker lighthouse. There had been very stormy conditions the previous day, with large waves continuing to impact the area a day later. The sunset conditions lasted no more than a couple of minutes and I was lucky to get the combination of sun on the lighthouse and the wave. Seconds after this picture was taken, the light was already fading.

The cruise ship Norwegian Dawn heading south off Sunderland. With a length of just under 300 metres, it is not a vessel which is ever likely to call into the Port! There is also the interesting contrast between the ship bathed in sunshine and the overcast Roker lighthouse.
