At this moment, not much whale. This was taken at a pull-out on Maui (Papawai Scenic Lookout), where you can usually see whales during the season. These folks are ready, but at least in this photo, no whales yet. (Must be tourists, no hats) The do have binoculars and video cameras at the ready. HFF everyone! May your disappointments be few! Maui, 2007, Chinese New Year. We joined a happy group at a local restaurant, had a great dinner, and then were entertained by some youth lion dancers. This woman is "feeding the lion", passing in money for good luck for the new year. The proceeds went to the youth organization.

Taken in 2007, this is a small shopping area near the big mall in Kahului. These buildings probably date from the 1950's and are typical of the "local" shopping and businesses. The terrible fire in Lahaina is obviously more recent, but keep in mind that this smaller area burned just 2 years before I took this photo (February 27, 2005). Buildings in the area caught fire during a day of very strong trade winds. A large local grocery store, and several businesses were destroyed before the fire department could arrive. We saw the fire from our house, and watched as all of the nearby wooden buildings (similar to this one) burned. - - - - - I failed to add this when I posted the photo. This was 2007, and cell phones were quite popular on Maui. However, the people here are just "talking story" as they say in the Islands. No one seems to be "head down" with their cell phone. The family in the background are enjoying lunch at the picnic tables in front of a restaurant.

The front area of the Baldwin Home Museum in Lahaina. We were there around the holidays, which explains the Christmas decorations on the street light poles. Looks like a nice place to sit and enjoy the endless parade. (UPDATE 2023: I fear that these buildings are now just smoking ruins.) Image processed with GIMP.

Taken with our very first digital camera, a Sony Mavica (used floppy disks to store the images). That was our car (Ford Explorer), entering our driveway on Maui. The stone wall is typical work of the Tongans in Hawai'i. We ended up with 3 such wall projects. Image processed with GIMP.

Taken quite a few years ago, during a photography class outing. We visited an area of Iao Valley that is missed by many tourists. There is a complete Japanese-style water garden deep into the valley. This bridge and native stone wall are just part of the display.

Took this in our neighborhood when we lived on Maui. The home owner tried to paint the retaining wall, but RAN OUT of paint. They had just enough paint left to tell us what happened.

Today we enjoy looking back at the wonderful warm day on Maui, while it is plenty cold here in South Dakota. (Many stories about our neighbors and neighborhood back then....) At least I call it by that name. This was a tree along a golf course on Maui. I was driving to work, and spotted this sunrise and tree silhouette.

Now, this is not the best quality image, etc, but it shows how we used to make our own pizza from scratch. Every Sunday on Maui, we made these, often more than one, and often with friends in for dinner. Half of the pizza has anchovies, just one of the many combinations we tried. This photo is also one of our earliest attempts at digital photography.
