Maui Sunrise with Road to Haleakala

11 Jan 2025 33 25 186
We took hundreds (and more) of photos of the amazing sunrises we saw from our Maui house. The road up to Haleakala makes an illuminated "snake" during this lovely sunrise. Taken in 2005. Image processed with GIMP.

Santuario di Santa Rosalia, Palermo (HFF)

11 Mar 2022 17 9 370
Santuario di Santa Rosalia, outside of Palermo. We visited this area as part of a local tour. The views in this area are wonderful, high above the noise and crowds of Palermo itself. I found Sicily to be a fascinating section of our cruise, and enjoyed all of our shore visits. Image processed with GIMP.

A view down the cliff from the top station of the Santorini Cable Car. The deep blue of the water is very impressive. Processed with GIMP.

Monument Valley Highway

08 May 2020 25 11 593
A pretty famous stretch of road. There were many folks pulled over to the side to take photos. Some of the more adventuresome were lying on their backs on the center line of the highway, trying to get dramatic perspective. Anyway, I had to get some pictures as I drove this stretch of road, too.

Alcan Highway

Taken along the "golden triangle" in Yukon. This is the famous AlCan Highway, built during WW II. This photo was taken in 2000, during our visit to Alaska and the surrounding area. Scanned from color print using GIMP.

Cumbres and Toltec Train on Curve

02 May 2020 11 3 560
We took a great excursion trip on the Cumbres and Toltec Railroad, from Antonito, Colorado, to Chama, New Mexico. This is a real steam line, burning coal. The line climbs up to a 10,000 foot pass, and we really enjoyed the autumn colors. The next day, we drove to some trackside areas, and took photos of the train heading uphill from Chama. See: swansonphotos.com/cumbres Some history: this line was originally part of the extensive network of the Denver and Rio Grande Western, one of the few narrow-gauge railroads to survive from the 19th century. When that line was seriously curtailed, and would have disappeared, two states took these parts over as tourist (scenic) railroads. In this case, the operation is run by the states of Colorado and New Mexico. The other section run currently is the Durango and Silverton, entirely within Colorado. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denver_and_Rio_Grande_Western_Railroad

College Fjord

30 Apr 2020 11 7 586
Taken on our 2007 cruise in Alaska. This is just one sight in College Fjord. The glaciers and mountains are quite spectacular. We later discovered that most of the time, the sun does not shine here, and the fjord is often shrouded in fog and mist.
