Fueling the Big Locomotives

21 Jun 2024 6 207
As we drove our RV across the wide open spaces of Wyoming, we followed the railroad tracks for quite a while. This was taken as we passed by the railroad yards near Guernsey, Wyoming (just off Highway 26). Took this through the windshield of our RV, and it has been processed with GIMP. They are fueling the road engines from tanker trucks. I think that these railroad yards do not have separate fuel tanks (or else don't have enough capacity). There were many other trains being fueled in this yard this way.

Taken in the port area of Albany, Australia. Lots of commercial activity, and there are fences for each area. Image processed with GIMP.

Street, Fence, Gates, and Bench (HFF,HBM)

The street where our ship was tied up. This is one of the major streets in St. Johns, Newfoundland. It is quiet now, but later in the day, there was a constant stream of cars, motorcycles, and trucks passing by. The security fence had only one opening, so we all passed through the covered area going one way or the other. Some of the local folks brought their huge Newfie dogs to the port; very interesting. The tanker truck near the right is fueling up the ship. The busses are for the shore excursions. There are a few specks of orange/red color to liven things up. Note the bench across the street. The security fence has, of course, various gates, including the one that we had to walk through. Image processed with GIMP.

(Fire)Truck in Talkeetna, Alaska

This Mercedes (fire)truck was parked in downtown Talkeetna, Alaska. Just had to get a photo of it. I think that it has been restored as a vehicle for one of the local bars. (There seem to be a lot of bars in Talkeetna...) Image processed with GIMP.

Spruce Soldiers on Logging Truck, 1918

04 Feb 2020 3 1 584
Purchased real-photo picture postcard of some Spruce Soldiers on a logging truck. The huge log being carried is a spruce tree. The wood was used to make airplane wings and parts in 1918 during the First World War. Note the license place indicates "Signal Corps", the Army department that oversaw airplanes. Some of the men appear to be civilians, but it turns out that the soldiers often wore logging work clothes, rather than military uniforms. The spruce stands were very isolated, and part of the Army men's job was to build the roads needed to access the tree stands. This is probably one of their roads. Other soldiers built railroads to gain access to the stands of trees. See: swansongrp.com/spruce.html
