At this moment, not much whale. This was taken at a pull-out on Maui (Papawai Scenic Lookout), where you can usually see whales during the season. These folks are ready, but at least in this photo, no whales yet. (Must be tourists, no hats) The do have binoculars and video cameras at the ready. HFF everyone! May your disappointments be few! The same image which I had cropped for the famous Delicate Arch, Arches National Park, Utah. Here are the hikers/photogs who are standing on the edge of the mountain, watching (and shooting) the sunrise. The PIP shows the Arch itself. Image processed with GIMP.

We did not hike up to Delicate Arch; the folks you see in the photo, did. We were at the viewpoint far down in the valley. Used the maximum telephoto with my Panasonic GX85. The rising sun has just touched 2/3's of the Arch. Some of the photographers on the mountain still have their tripods set up. There was a very nice log railing all around the viewpoint area, which I used as a "tripod".

Taken in 2007, this is a small shopping area near the big mall in Kahului. These buildings probably date from the 1950's and are typical of the "local" shopping and businesses. The terrible fire in Lahaina is obviously more recent, but keep in mind that this smaller area burned just 2 years before I took this photo (February 27, 2005). Buildings in the area caught fire during a day of very strong trade winds. A large local grocery store, and several businesses were destroyed before the fire department could arrive. We saw the fire from our house, and watched as all of the nearby wooden buildings (similar to this one) burned. - - - - - I failed to add this when I posted the photo. This was 2007, and cell phones were quite popular on Maui. However, the people here are just "talking story" as they say in the Islands. No one seems to be "head down" with their cell phone. The family in the background are enjoying lunch at the picnic tables in front of a restaurant.

While our cruise ship was docked in Auckland, we were entertained by a nearby "restaurant on a hoist". This dining experience took place far above the ground, on the end of a crane. The dining "system" has just left the ground, and the onlookers are enjoying the even as much as the diners. We have sailed out of San Francisco, with the Golden Gate Bridge now in the background. Note the fellows sitting in the hot tub on the ship. Street scene in St. Johns, Newfoundland. Our cruise stopped for a Sunday in this lovely port. Nothing much was open, but later in the day the main street was jumping (screech anyone?) I really liked the paint job on the Commercial Chambers building. So these tables aren't in use, but they are ready. Didn't expect that I would be taking "street photographs", but the fellow on the left had some business or other here, so he became part of the street scene. Image processed with GIMP.

The street where our ship was tied up. This is one of the major streets in St. Johns, Newfoundland. It is quiet now, but later in the day, there was a constant stream of cars, motorcycles, and trucks passing by. The security fence had only one opening, so we all passed through the covered area going one way or the other. Some of the local folks brought their huge Newfie dogs to the port; very interesting. The tanker truck near the right is fueling up the ship. The busses are for the shore excursions. There are a few specks of orange/red color to liven things up. Note the bench across the street. One of the stops we made on our tour of Trinidad was a scenic outlook. The local folks were selling various items. This stand had refreshing drinks, including freshly-cut coconuts. For Sunday Challenge, this shows some "street" consuming.

Some were trying to get just the right angle with their photo. Some were posing so that the photographer (probably not in this picture) could put them together, some were taking selfies. The object of their photography: www.ipernity.com/doc/2543754/52008016 We saw this kind of behavior in Pisa, as visitors from around the world positioned themselves and their photographers so that they were "holding up the leaning tower". To me, this tableau of people looks like a store window, or some frozen moment in time.
