We took hundreds (and more) of photos of the amazing sunrises we saw from our Maui house.
The road up to Haleakala makes an illuminated "snake" during this lovely sunrise. Taken in 2005.

Union Pacific Steam Locomotive #4014 near Vail Iow…

Another adventure for us, following the massive and remarkable #4014 through the United States.
We found a rural crossing near Vail, Iowa, and after waiting for nearly 2 hours, we got our chance to see this magnificent machine pass by.
In the past, 4014 was given their own clear track. In recent years, they have been required to fit in with normal freight traffic. So this video includes some MOW (Maintenance of Way) equipment, and a couple of long freight trains, as an introduction.
This video was made from photos and videos taken by both my wife and myself. She did all the compositing work in KDenLive. Cameras include Sony and JVC video, as well as Panasonic GX85 units (still sequence, and HD video).
(Many thanks for the favs and views, but there was a fundamental error in the titles. We had to replace the original video, which can only be done by deleting and re-installing. Again, many thanks for the faves and views.)

Rock and Fence (PiP) (HFF)

At the entrance to the local fairgrounds, they have a typical rock. I think that the fence is there to protect the rock, or protect the cars that might run into it.
This native stone is used in many buildings in the Sioux Falls, South Dakota area. Not so many years ago, it was quarried and used regionally.
The Picture-in-a-Picture shows a LOT more of these rocks at the Sioux Falls park.
You see these boulders around, as the farmers who ploughed them up, decided they were too large to completely remove, so they shoved them over to the corner of their field.
The plaque indicates the entrance to the fairgrounds.
You can see the parking tram in the background, taking fair visitors to and from the parking area.

We spent a beautiful day in the Theodore Roosevelt National Park (North Unit) when the fall leaves were very colorful.
This was taken at the entrance road to the campground.

Monument Valley Highway

A pretty famous stretch of road. There were many folks pulled over to the side to take photos. Some of the more adventuresome were lying on their backs on the center line of the highway, trying to get dramatic perspective.
Anyway, I had to get some pictures as I drove this stretch of road, too.

Taken along the "golden triangle" in Yukon. This is the famous AlCan Highway, built during WW II. This photo was taken in 2000, during our visit to Alaska and the surrounding area.
Scanned from color print using GIMP.
Paraglider in Sunset, Quartzsite, Arizona

We had some spectacular sunsets during our visits in Quartzsite. I was taking sunset shots, when the paraglider flew overhead. I was able to wait until they were in the frame for this shot.
For the Sunday Challenge, this offers several layers of yellow, from the bright sun to the deeper orange.

Spruce Soldiers on Logging Truck, 1918
04 Feb 2020 |
|
|
|
Purchased real-photo picture postcard of some Spruce Soldiers on a logging truck. The huge log being carried is a spruce tree. The wood was used to make airplane wings and parts in 1918 during the First World War.
Note the license place indicates "Signal Corps", the Army department that oversaw airplanes.
Some of the men appear to be civilians, but it turns out that the soldiers often wore logging work clothes, rather than military uniforms.
The spruce stands were very isolated, and part of the Army men's job was to build the roads needed to access the tree stands. This is probably one of their roads. Other soldiers built railroads to gain access to the stands of trees.
