The Sunday Challenge was to manipulate an existing photo, and post it. I thought that the original of this photo had already been uploaded to Ipernity. Apparently, not. So, I just uploaded the "original". Here are a pair of Hong Kong night photos, one straight, the other "en-noised" by GIMP. Looks interesting on a black background.

We could see much of "downtown" Sydney from our apartment balcony. It being close to Christmas, they were illuminating several buildings close by (TownHall area). This particular one changed color every 30 seconds or so. Every once in a while, it was orange. This was a test of my new (2016) Panasonic GX85. I set it at ISO 25,600, which accounts for the obvious noise you will see in the photo. However, after a little work in GIMP, I was able to make it square format, and improve the details a little. Overall, I'm amazed by the low-light capability of this camera.

We were entering Sydney Harbor at night, and the sights were remarkable. The illuminated sign for Luna Park is famous, and well worth a picture. (Some people thinks it's kinda creepy) For the Sunday Challenge, this is very definitely a "type" of architecture. Note the towers on the sides of the face, they look very much like the Chrysler Building in New York. Taken with the Nikon D700 at high ISO. Taken when we lived in Maui. We could see the ships coming and going from Kahului Harbor, while sitting on our lanai. This was the "Pride of Hawai'i", leaving the harbor. We did not have any fancy digital camera at the time, so just set a long shutter and let the ship make a "smear". We attended the 2015 Balloon Fiesta, boondocking in our motorhome. Every night the Fiesta had a fireworks show. This was taken with the Nikon D700, trying to get the exposure just right. See: swansonphotos.com/balloon_fiesta and swansongrp.com/P/p/night_narrative/index.html

Taken during our safari at Kruger National Park, South Africa. Near the end of the first day, the driver took us around to see some animals in the dark. He used a spotlight to illuminate them, which probably caused some irritation... There was a pride of lions in the grass nearby, and his spotlight caught this lion quite close to us. (The lions are over-lit, but there are now some possibly dangerous shadows. Who else is in the grass, waiting for a Sunday Challenge?) Our cruise ship was in the main harbor in Malta. We enjoyed visiting this very interesting area, and the ship was just about to leave, when I noticed that many of the main landmarks were illuminated. (Seems like plenty of shadows to complement the lighted areas, per the Sunday Challenge.) Took several shots, using the high ISO capability of the Nikon D700. Image processed with GIMP. Every time we've visited Hong Kong, the night views have been spectacular. In the old days, it was incandescent bulbs, then neon. Now, vast amounts of LED's (and lasers) light up the night sky.
