happy news fence - HFF!

10 Dec 2021 39 31 436
A couple of young friends who live in the neighborhood just had a daughter and when I saw this pink bow on the gate of a nearby condominium I couldn't help fantasising about the two girls growing up here, going to the same school, maybe even becoming friends some day. As difficult as the future seems to look for the new generations, I still felt a little warm spot for these two little ladies who might some day join hands in friendship. HFF, everyone! Be careful, get your boosters and have a great weekend.

Sunflower gate - HFF! (PIP)

Old ironwork with sunflower decorations and, for once, a wide open gate! In the pip, the other half of the gate showing off its red color against an equally colorful rose bush. Happy Red Fence Friday and wishing everyone a colorful weekend!

restaurant gate - HFF! (w/ PIPS)

Right now restaurants can only do take away and must in any case be closed by 6 p.m. But famous Trattoria Il Cigno is clearly kept in good working order, waiting for a chance to reopen at least for outdoor dining. I liked the ladle decoration on the gate. In the PIPS another couple of takes of the gate and fence, with the blooming wisteria. Wishing everyone an HFF and a really nice weekend!

country villa (PIP)

A crenellated villa a few minutes from downtown Florence does a credible impersonation of a castle as it basks in the afternoon sun. In the main image: the entryway seen through the gate. In the pip: a view from the side fence HFF everyone!

new coat of paint

One of the public housing buildings (now probably owned by the former renters) in my part of town recently got a new coat of bright yellow paint that made for interesting contrasts. I was told these public housing buildings were originally build to house Italian refugees from Istria and Dalmatia who were escaping the purges in Yugoslavia after the end of WWII. They brought their cultural habits with them and to this day every summer they get together at the nearby park for traditional dancing. This summer, couple dancing had to be eschewed of course and the program was substituted with open air folk theatre. HFF everyone!

sunny courtyard

Sun colors and sunlight in an inner courtyard shine through the gate and get reflected on the entrance door. HFF once more!

long way to the front door

09 Aug 2020 9 13 178
On a bike ride on the hills just outside Florence, I found this uncharacteristically wide open gate and just had to investigate. A handwritten sign on the wall just outside the gate said: Doorbell out of order, go ring the bell at the end of the "viottola" (Tuscan for lane/path). That fully explains the open gate: it would be quite a trek to go open the front door otherwise :D

open gate (PIP)

The open gate at the garden restaurant within the park. I liked the lines, colors and the shadows. For once, I even liked the inclusion of the photographer's shadow on the lower right :) I have had a smartphone only for a few weeks and this is one of my first attempts with smartphone photography. I still prefer my camera, but if you didn't bring it along, it's a pretty handy substitute, I must say (except that I have had to put in by hand the date it was actually taken. Maybe I just haven't figured out yet how to set my phone to show correct metadata.) In the Pip, the just opened garden restaurant waiting for customers in the evening light. This time of year last year it would have been already packed with early diners. Now customers are few and tables well distanced to comply with anti-covid19 measures. Happy Fence Friday to all!

Palazzo Corsini gate

Deprived of "fence hunting" for the time being due to the lockdown. So, here's an image from last summer. Entranceway of Palazzo Corsini on the homonymous Lungarno. I waited a while because I wanted to include a passerby in the shot and then, this young woman showed up and actually went in. I really liked how the stripes on her shopper criss-crossed the fence.

city corners and HFF

Took this a few years ago as I walked through the old downtown streets and alleys of my hometown in northern Italy. The mountains visible in the distance are the Veneto PreAlps. HFF everyone!

shelter from the rain

A sudden downpour caught me on the Lungarno as I rode my bike home. I remembered Palazzo Corsini has a wide covered entranceway and reached it just in time to avoid getting drenched. A work crew was putting up a glass covering over the Palazzo's courtyard and the rain distorted the translucency, blurring out the facade of the building.
