beauty on the brink - (4 PIPs)

05 Sep 2021 34 18 211
River plants live on the very edge of two worlds, their lives precariously balanced on a tight rope. A few centimetres farther and the water would drown them, a bit more rain and the river would gnaw at their roots and carry them away on the current, half a step more inland and the rocky banks would no longer provide enough moisture. As summer comes to an end, their beauty is poised on the brink. Soon the rains will come, swelling the river and moving that line of transition between land and the watery world. Their short lived paradise and their miraculous little lives will end with the season and many months will go by before their children - if they were lucky enough to take root on the right spot, that magical place of transition - will bring it back.

the droopy flower - HFF! - (PIPs)

The shadow of a park lamp on a blue fence that bars entry to a work in progress area along the banks of the river. In the PIPs: people on both banks seem to enjoy stopping to watch the work and comment. HFF everybody and have a great weekend, with no droopiness, no "blues", no work in progress detaining you!

definitely no trespassing ... HFF! (PIP)

Fence upon fence upon a closed door with peeling paint block entrance to an old farm house that has been for years in use by a local Scouts group, but has remained closed for the duration of the pandemic. A bit "in your face", but I liked the colors and the textures. In the PIP a different view of the same subject. Happy Fence Friday to everyone. Have a colorful weekend!

biking to work

For years I rode the bus and tram to work. At that time in the morning and then again in the afternoon when everyone gets off work, the buses are packed with short tempered and often not exactly sweet-smelling masses. It's the perfect time of the day for pickpockets and you have to be very careful with your purse or billfold. One day in 2008, on the occasion of a general transportation strike, I decided to try my luck and ride my bike there and back, a 1 hour ride right across town each way. That first day, when I got to work my face was the color of a ripe tomato. But here I am, 13 years later, and I never went back to using public transportation to get to work. Over the years, I experimented with various routes and now most of my way there I follow the course of the river, through riverside parks, trails and bike paths. I think the photos show quite clearly why I much prefer starting my day this way rather than on a crowded, smelly bus ... Not to mention that, nowadays, public transportation is also a hot bed that seems almost specifically designed to help the virus spread. The blue flowers in the photos are common chicory flowers. Chicory is used widely in Italian cuisine and cultivated in most kitchen gardens. So much so, that it manages to escape and reseed itself just about anywhere. While it likes growing on open lawns, you can only see the flowers in the morning, because they close up tightly and become invisible when the sun hits them directly. For Andy: may the road to recovery, even if challenging in itself, include little pleasant surprises that make the work less hard.

Just thought we needed a splash of color to brighten up our Wednesday ... I am pretty sure Gabi will approve :)

accidental art

30 Mar 2021 28 32 206
In case you are wondering ... here's what's going on in this shot: In Florence, recycle bins for glass are large, squarish, blue containers, to be found at street corners, parking lots, etc. They have an opening at the top, big enough for most glass bottles, but not for larger items. Here, somebody evidently needed to dispose of a large glass pane inscribed here and there with the word love in various languages. Unable to fit it in the opening at the top, they just rested it against the bin and left it there, wrong side out, so that the words appear as their specular reflection. The late afternoon sun then projected shadows of the words against the bin. Finally, a curious photographer came along and decided this would work to show that sometimes art can be the result of a string of totally random chances :)))

The light of the westering sun shines on two friends as they take a break from their riverside walk. HBM and have a nice week, everyone!

colorful berries (PIPS!)

When we think of fall colors, autumn leaves are the first thing that comes to mind, but berries also contribute their startling hues to the season!

autumn on the wall

One can always count on the Virginia creeper to put up an amazing autumn show. This particular colorful curtain was overshadowing a wall by the Arno River Bank path and I had to literally wait my turn to take a couple of shots of it, as nearly everybody who was out for a Saturday afternoon walk seemed to have fallen for its charm. In the pip: a closer look at the berries. Hope everyone had a good weekend despite the lockdowns that are either already en force or looming on the horizon. I confess I spent it outside taking pictures instead of answering your kind and generous comments. I know you will forgive me since it looks like we might soon be confined at home again (parts of Italy might be given lockdown orders already on Monday).

blue warehouse

the last of the sunlight played among the blue equipment piled in a warehouse by the river. The city water purification plant is right next door, so I imagine these are parts used for the water pipes system.

The last of the sun light reflected by colourful buildings on the opposite bank played on the wake left by a canoe on the Arno river.
