Kidney beans are not easy to find around here. A friend who knows our preference for them found some dried ones at the farmer's market and gifted us a bag. I love their color and decided to document the various stages of preparation. First pip: soaking in water for at least 12 hours. They get all wrinkly as the peel rehydrates faster than the kernel inside. Second pip and main photo: after soaking, just drained. Third pip: cooked and dressed, ready to eat! With about half of them I made a less healthy but tasty "chili con carne" which ... didn't last long enough to be photographed! :D

More light games by the afternoon sun in the kitchen

Sorry I am late posting the answer to yesterday's "mystery photo". Good job, Isabel! You pretty much guessed it. It was not in the freezer, however. We had just brought it up from our cellar.

Italians have been on lockdown for nearly two weeks now. And the regulations are quite stringent - no setting foot out of the house for any reason other than essential necessities: food, medicines, walking the dog if you have one (but only briefly and only close to home). No doubt some of us are beginning to feel imprisoned in our own homes. But there are always those special moments, the ones that make you love your home, its comfort, familiarity, intimacy. For me, it's the afternoon light coming in at a slant into my small, cluttered, but colorful kitchen.
