Whitby is a seaside town in Yorkshire, northern England, split by the River Esk. On the East Cliff, overlooking the North Sea, the ruined Gothic Whitby Abbey was Bram Stoker’s inspiration for “Dracula”. Nearby is the Church of St. Mary, reached by 199 steps.

Naturally formed by the estuary of the River Esk, Whitby Harbour was the main source of income for the residents of Whitby for centuries. From traditional fishing to whaling, shipbuilding, and alum export, Whitby Harbour was the base for it all!
Originally known as the only viable ‘road’ into the town, Whitby Harbour was used as early as the 1300s by merchants from Northern Europe to trade goods with the wealthy Abbey. The wine was by far the most common import to the harbour whilst salt herring was the most common export. Today Whitby Harbour is a wonderful place to wander, shop, eat, drink and catch a boat trip

The harbour you see today is the result of many centuries of man-made improvements to the original natural harbour formed by the estuary of the River Esk. Contrary to most people’s instincts the piers lie to the East and West of the harbour mouth, which actually faces due North. Whitby is one of the few places in the UK where you can watch the sun rise and set over the sea in summer.

High Bridestones

The High Bridestones are found on the Coast to Coast path on Sleights Moor, two miles east of Grosmont. They are easily visible from the path, about 200 yards farther up from the Low Bride Stones. The stones date from the Bronze Age. Many have now fallen, but there are still several standing proud above the heath. They are thought to have once formed two separate "four-poster" stone circles.
