DPP #8300 arriving at Nadrazi Modrany, Modrany, Pr…

This is the tram stop for Nadrazi Modrany, or rather Modrany Zaztavka, as the real Nadrazi Modrany is a bit to the south. #8300 was working service 12, which would take me back into town.

Old Smokestack, Edit 2, Modrany, Prague, CZ, 2009

This is my light edit of the Modrany smokestack. This is more what it looked like in real life. I'm not sure why the scan came out so grey and dark, and I haven't even uploaded it since I don't like how it looks.

In an empty lot in Modrany, there's this smokestack still standing there, for what reason I don't know. Maybe the workers were frightened of it falling over, or maybe it has some historical significance, although if that's true they probably should have kept the factory up as well. The photo lab did a nice index again for this one, but when I scanned the negative I had some trouble again. I did this edit, which makes the weather look dark and gloomy, but which gives nice sky detail, and then I did another lighter and more realistic one which is my next upload...

In spite of my earlier edit to get the most out of this photo I did another one with high saturation and contrast to achieve the early evening lighting that was there in real life. I may have overdone it, though, so I'm not sure which photo is really better.

This picture took some editing, surprisingly. The photo lab did a nice index of it, but when I scanned the negative myself it was really dark and dull, requiring some work in Gimp, and now I think it looks reasonably decent.

Many branchline services in the Czech Republic are run by Class 749 diesels, which are if anything overkill for the job. They have about 1103kw of power, or about 1479 horsepower, and can run about 100Km/h at maximum speed. The horsepower isn't high for a freight locomotive, and if anything isn't enough, but for hauling only two bi-level coaches at slow speed it's quite a lot.

This train had another small locomotive that looked even smaller than 700162-1, but it wasn't. #703713-8 is a Class 703 diesel, which weighs 24 metric tons, 2 more than a Class 700.

There seems to be at least some MOW equipment based in Modrany, in addition to the spine cars that I saw there for containers (From where I don't know. I'm assuming the intermodel facility where they're loaded and unloaded is elsewhere.). The locomotives used for the Modrany MOW trains are exceptionally tiny, this one being a Class 700 diesel that only weighs 22 metric tons.

When most people think of Modrany, I assume that they think of Modrany Zaztavka, where the trams stop, but in reality the larger station is further south, and older. Here's a shot of it taken across the yard from the bike path.
