Karlovy Lazne, Prague, CZ, 2009

|
Karlovy Lazne claims to be the largest nightclub in Central Europe, in spite of being located in a historic building. The clock tower is one of the most visible landmarks on the Vltava, which is located directly behind it from where I was standing here.

Cafe Atmosphere is a nice little cafe where I had breakfast on the day I was shooting photos around the Vltava.
Barrier in the Vltava, Prague, CZ, 2009
13 Jul 2009 |
|
This is another mystery structure of sorts, in that I don't know whether it's supposed to be a breakwater, a barrier to protect buildings onshore from boats, or something else. I also don't know what "Tacet" means. Does anybody know?

This is actually a mini canal that allows boats on the Vltava to bypass the waterfall by the Karluv Most. I looked up the name on Google Earth and it was called Certovka on there, although I'm not sure if this is accurate.
Altmarkt at Night, Dresden, Germany, 2009
13 Jul 2009 |
|
The most challenging part of rebuilding Dresden in the years following World War II was the Altmarkt, although this reconstruction is one of the most complete, as it was the most missed. This night shot of the clock tower was the only truly good shot I got of it on this visit, however.
Freiberger Bier, Dresden, Germany, 2009
13 Jul 2009 |
|
For dinner, I went to the Freiberger Gasthaus, which I'm assuming is run by the Freiberger brauhaus, or vice versa. I was surprised when I scanned the photos that this shot wasn't blurred or unrealistically discolored, so I uploaded it.

This is, as far as I know, one of the long Bombardier trams in Dresden, making its stop at Hauptbahnhof. I don't know of hand whether this is an 8-axle or 12-axle unit, however, as the photo doesn't show the length or the number.
Old Roundhouse, Pirna, Sachsen, Germany, 2009
13 Jul 2009 |
|
In the former East Germany, a lot of steam locomotive infrastructure is still in place, both in use and not. This roundhouse in Pirna is one such facility, although it's hard to tell just from the photo if it's in service or not.
Ex-CSD #475.179, Decin, Ustecky Kraj, Bohemia (CZ)…

I originally had no idea what this locomotive was because the photo was so blurred, but eventually I found the info that I needed. This is Ex-CSD 475.179, which is an operable 475 Class 4-8-2 based at Decin, as seen here. I don't have the exact build date, but it would have been sometime between 1947 and 1950. The power rating is 1480kW (1985 horsepower), and the maximum speed is officially 100Km/h, although obviously a locomotive this powerful with medium-size drivers could probably do more.

As my train headed north towards the border, I took several shot of the snowy scenes as they went by, but many were limited by poot light and the tinted windows on the train. This one came out better than most. The church is the church of St. Mary.

This tree was so frosted that it looks like an IR shot taken in the summer, but it isn't.

Here's another Austrian locomotive that happened to be waiting in Holesovice, double headed with either a CD 362 or 363 Class electric.

At this point, my train, coming from Budapest (if I'm not mistaken) hadn't arrived yet, but the locomotive that would take the train into Germany, CD #362164-6, was already waiting.

My first international trip after getting back to Prague was to Dresden, which meant that I departed from Nadrazi Holesovice. Since the Schengen agreement took effect, my sense is that the various European railways have been less hesitant to allow their locomotives to operate across international borders, as these Austrian OBB Class 1216 electrics have been turning up in Holesovice quite a bit lately.

Here you can see the building with the clock on it, down near the Metro.
