Here's the platform trainboard after I took EC379 back to Prague. As you can see, the restoration work done on Hlavni Nadrazi recently has made the Prague trainshed easy to confuse with the Dresden one.

Here's another view of the traffic in Dresden Hbf. These trains look to be two locals, one a Class 143 (or similar)-hauled bi-level on the left, and a Talent DMU on the right. In spite of the 1970-present electrification program in the Eastern part of Germany, many lines are still unelectrified, meaning you can still find diesels.

Seen here on a local, #143251-7 is a 143 Class electric, built sometime around 1985 for the Deutsche Reichsbahn of East Germany. These units were part of a larger electrification program to replace steam locomotives, and to a lesser extent diesels, on the DR, with oil prices being a factor. They put out 3,720Kw, or 4,990 horsepower, and have a maximum service speed of 120Km/h, which isn't adequate for express services anymore but which is fine for many locals.

While I was waiting for my train back to Prague, I amused myself with some railfanning. Recently restored, Dresden Hauptbahnhof is a great place to watch trains, with its good food, heavy traffic, large trainshed, and generally spectacular architecture. The rail traffic includes Intercities, Eurocities, and even ICE's, not to mention all the locals, including bi-level ones like the one if the foreground, and obviously DVB trams outside, including old Tatra T4's.

Here's an external view of the Grossmarkthalle, which makes its history much more obvious. The brickwork even looks relatively unrestored, with some of the original coal soot still on it. At the time, the soot would have been a nuisance, but today it adds character.

This department store looks very retro, like something from the late 19th Century, and that's not an accident. It IS that old, actually, being originally the Grossmarkthalle, built in 1893-1895. It's exactly my type of building, or rather one of the many 19th Century curiousities that I like. There's a website in German about it here: www.dresdner-stadtteile.de/Zentrum/Friedrichstadt/Strassen_Friedrichstadt/Weisseritzstrasse/Grossmarkthalle/grossmarkthalle.html Perhaps most importantly, it's nice to see it still fulfilling its original purpose.

This was my second shot, after the tram passed.

I've been hunting these articulated cargo trams or rather, "CarGoTrams" for 8 years, ever since I first spotted on my first visit to Dresden. While they may not be unique in the world, they're certainly very unusual, especially in that they transport exclusively car parts. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CarGoTram en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tram#Cargo_trams Officially, DVB, the Dresden transit authority, operate these trams, even if they serve only VW and have VW logos on them.

We were 20 minutes late getting into Dresden, although I've forgotten the details of why. Obviously, the delay happened in the Czech Republic.

This was the start of yet another trip to Dresden, although this one would only be for a day. This train was #EC176 "Johannes Brahms," which was actually to Hamburg-Altona via Dresden. The locomotive on the point is Ceske Drahy #380015-8, which would be cut off at the border.
