Flood Barriers at the Malostranska Metro Station,…

05 Nov 2013 257
Here's a shot of the flood barriers that I mentioned earlier. This one was built around one of the shafts into the Malostranska Metro station, which if I'm not mistaken is for a cargo elevator (does anybody know?). The ones along the river looked roughly the same.

During the height of the flooding, the army were called out to provide additional crews to construct, maintain, and guard the flood barriers. A number of them deployed in these Tatra 6X6 trucks, which are a relatively recent addition to their inventory and which sometimes appear at car shows.

Miklasky Chram in the Snow, Malostranske Namesti,…

In Malostranske Namesti, I took two shots of Miklasky Chram. This was the better one. The lines through the picture in the sky are the cantenary for the trams, another fixture of the square for over 100 years.

Malostranska Metro Station, Prague, CZ, 2009

In the past two years or so, I've noticed a really cool 19th-Century-style gas balloon (as opposed to a modern hot air balloon) that's been used for sightseeing over the Mala Strana. The last time I saw it, some idiot had thought it would be a good idea to cover it with grafitti, but this was when it still looked good, there on the upper right. The building in the foreground is the Malostranska Metro station, and the Metrocafe.

Since I started my thread about the Skoda 14t trams in the Prague Trams group, a new batch have been ordered, and if I'm not mistaken this is one of the first of them. The highest number I've spotted so far is 9170, but I don't know if it will be the last.

Tunnels Near Malostranske Namesti, High Saturation…

The original negative for this shot was very low contrast, so the version that I uploaded to Flickr was post processed to increase it. I did two versions in my editing, though, and this one was actually the first, being deliberately edited with very high contrast and saturation to maximize the brilliance of the colors. It isn't realistic, but I liked it enough when I made it that I decided to save it and also upload it.

Tunnels Near Malostranske Namesti, Prague, CZ, 200…

These three tunnels connect Malostranske Namesti, home to the Czech Parliament and St. Nicholas's Church, where Mozart used to perform, with the area around the Malostranska Metro/tram stop. I'm not sure over how many years these were constructed, but as you can see each has its own unique design. The tunnel on the left is for the tram traffic, and is partly supported at the entrance by buttresses, the tunnel in the center, the simplest of the three, is for auto traffic, and the tunnel on the right, with its traditional arched design, is for pedestrians. It isn't clear from the signage which one is for bikes, but on organized bike rides that I've been on, the police have directed us through the auto tunnel. Normally, though, I wouldn't do this, since in Prague you can walk a bike on pedestrian paths, so I just wouldn't ride through here in that case. My only real regret about this photo is that I didn't manage to get a tram emerging from the tunnel. Maybe some other time....
