Here's the extreme grade to the summit. I don't actually precisely what it is. Some particularly ambitious people were jogging to the summit alongside the tracks.

The Snowdon Mountain Railway, while only 4.7 miles long, is so steep that it's a cog railway. It's also 2'7.5" narrow-gauge. Built in 1896, it is still partly steam powered. Here you can see both steam and diesel power. The terminal at the bottom of the mountain is at Llanberis, which is also a station on the Llanberis Lake Railway and the Carnarvonshire Railway. The Summit station is integrated into the cafe mentioned earlier.

The museum also has a circle of narrow-gauge (the wider of the two gauges, if they indeed have more than one) track for running a tourist train for visitors. This locomotive appears to be a diesel-mechanical, but they had a few (inoperable) steam locomotives too.
Balloon Over Prague, CZ, 2008

In 2008, and I think in 2007 also, this very old-fashioned-looking gas balloon could be seen giving tourists a spectacular (and possibly terrifying) view of the city from that little seat underneath. Strangely, it didn't have a basket. I'm not aware of whether it will be used again this summer, but its appearance certainly adds to the retro feel of old Prague.
NRHS Excursion Train, Sherburne, NY, USA, 1990

This is my oldest photo on Flickr!! I scanned it with my black and white Caere Omniscan, but it was originally in color, and I have every intention of eventually getting a color scan. I think I already one somewhere, if the drive it was on hasn't been wiped by one thing or another. This was my first National Railway Historical Society excursion while actually a member, and it was sometime in the summer of 1990. We went from Utica, NY to Sherburne, and had a really good time. Notice the dome cars on the train! The locomotive was at that time the last operating ALCO C430, but in reality a few have been bouncing in and out of service, including this one, and they're heavily rebuilt by now, especially this one!!
