I used my trusty English language guidebook to these mountains. It was over 20 years old at the time and the path I was on (which was supposed lead straight back to the palace) was suddenly blocked off at this point. I had no alternative (I had a bus to catch) but to plough on through thorny thickets as tall as houses. I emerged (and caught the bus, just) but with my clothes torn to shreds. The folk on the bus avoided the blooded spectacle completely!

Herrería Woods and San Lorenzo de El Escorial. Can you spot the smoke from the forester's fire?

The palace / monastery seen gently floating through the forest glades!

Shadows were lengthening and it was at the end of a fairly long but pleasant walk. I had to get back to the bus station (behind the palace) and in midwinter it gets dark quickly. I was still 45 minutes away from the bus station, it was getting colder by the minute and so I wasn't going to hang around for too long taking photos but this view appealed to me! !

In the summer, this wood is teeming with picnicing groups and families. The Spanish normally prefer to go to a restaurant with the family at weekends rather than picnic in the open, but many make an exception here.

The palace monastery of San Lorenzo de EL Escorial is hidden by the trees. Can someone help me out with the breed here?
