Once a major port for the tin mining areas of Cornwall (importing coal to fuel the pumping engine houses and smelting processes, and exporting tin), now a shadow of its former self. The gash in the foreground is a collapsed sea cave. There are no reports of when this appeared but it must have been dramatic at the time! The town became a hive of industry in the late 18th century and as the structure seems fairly recent (in geological terms) I would guess that the sea cave collapse might have occured somewhere between 1500 and 1750, but it's only a guess.

Lion's Den 2 and Housel Bay, for Pam.

I thought I had lost this but I found it buried in the archives. This is a better view of The Lion's Den. The sea does splash around in the bottom, but it is a very deep hole, you can walk right round it. A collapsed sea cave that suddenly appeared overnight in 1840. Near The Lizard, England's southernmost point.
