A bit of a shock if your carriage pulls up alongside this oversized print of Hans Holbein The Younger's Henry VIII on the Madrid metro. Totally unexpected! It's advertising the nearby Museo Reína Sofia, where it resides.
Henry VIII of England and Friedrich II Hohenstaufen, Holy Roman Emperor. These two were surely twins, seperated by 300 years! Battles with the Papacy, dynastic considerations, etc. I read their life stories and there is no difference at all!

To celebrate the centenary, some trains were painted in the original livery.
Valdeacederas Metro Station, Line 1.
My sister and fiancé lived round the corner from here when I used to visit them in the early 80s so I knew this station very well. And yet today was the first time I had used it since those days!

Between 2011 and 2013 I used this metro station up to 8 times a day. I probably knew it better than any station in the UK including Pinner station on the Metropolitan Line, London. And that is a statement I never thought I would make in a month of Sundays!
The train is going INTO the tunnel. Cars drive on the right in Madrid as you would expect but metro trains do the opposite, as in London! I tried to find out why and read that it was for 'historic reasons'!
