Convento Monasterio de San Julian y San Antonio, Sierra de La Cabrera. A brisk trot to the summit of Cancho Gordo from here should take no more than 45 minutes!

One way back down to the village!

The southern half of the great plain of Castilla, Castilla La Nueva, starts at the foot of these cliffs of the Sierra de La Cabrera. In fact the centre of Spain, this plain or 'meseta' is a tableland (as the Spanish name implies) or plateau and relatively high, between 800 and 1,000 feet. The mountain ranges that bisect it such as here are therfore higher than they seem. For example, Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in Britain seems much higher than the Sierra de La Cabrera as it rises straight up from sea level at 1,345 m or 4,413 feet. El Cancho Largo, the highest point along this ridge here is 1,563 m or 5,127 feet and doesn't seem anywhere near as high as Ben Nevis. Nonetheless, the large village (or small town) of La Cabrera looks tiny from here and the views are spectacular; on a clear day much of Madrid can be seen.

Rock Window

I've posted different shots of this before. Overlooking the town of La Cabrera and the vast expanse of the plains of the Southern Spanish Meseta. Unless there is one I have yet to discover, I reckon this is the largest rock window in the Sierra de La Cabrera. The main Madrid Burgos N1 motorway cuts across the picture. Sight and Sound: Well there is a window theme here! www.youtube.com/watch?v=f5B3m1ylEfI

La Cabrera town from the ridge

Sierra de La Cabrera granite ridge. It really is a very long way down from there. Even I wasn't going to inch much further forward (The slab in front is steeper than it looks). I positioned myself here only because if I lost my balance, that boulder has a fair chance of stopping my fall!

One of the very few photos (of about 8) that I took with my ill-fated and short-lived Samsung. Some of you may remember the saga on Pano and my vow never to own a Samsung ever again!

La Sierra de La Cabrera

Granite outcrops on the ridge, overlooking the eponymous town. No vultures on this day - I had intended to get some shots. Oh well! And yes. I took the few steps to the end you see here. But I had put my camera back in my pocket and felt that I needed both hands for stability and so that is where my camera remained! Anyway, this vantage-point is better!
