I'm fond of these, the flower heads of the cistus seem to have 'personality!'

There are three main cistus types in the Sierra, this one wth its magenta smudge at the base of the petal, an all white petal version (the most common) and a miniature version, very much smaller.

These are unusually low lying; they normlly form dense and impenetrable clusters of bushes (rather like rhododendrons) and cover whole mountainsides.
