These Sequoia trees were photographed near the car park for the General Grant tree. We walked the trails here, some of the few trails open in King's Canyon National Park.

While in California recently we spent a day at King's Canyon National Park and several days in Sequoia National Park. Though many trails and areas of the park were still closed on account of snow we were able to see the Sequoias which my wife had never seen and I only once as a young child. One of the short trails we were able to take took us to the General Grant tree, the world's third largest tree by volume. It is 40 feet (12 m) in diameter at the base, 268 feet (82 m) in height, weighs 1254 tons and is 1700 years old which means it starrted growing during the reign of the Emperor Constantine.

When in California recently we spent a day in King's Canyon National Park and camped there for a night. These are some of the Sequoia trees in the park. Sequoias are not as tall as Redwoods but are much bulkier.

I wish I could describe what it is like to walk among the Redwoods, but I am not sure there are words adequate to describe them and the awe one feels walking among them. I do know that when among them I always feel like I should speak in whispers. These photos, too, the last I'll post of the Redwoods, only hint at their majesty and beauty.

I tried a number of these photos to try and give some sense of how tall these trees are, but none of the photos really tells their story.

This was one of the trails we walked in Jedediah Smith State Park, a trail that meanders through the Simpson-Reed Grove of Redwoods.

Another photo from Jedediah Smith State Park and the Redwoods. I believe this was taken the first morning in northern California and the grove is the Templeman Grove.

Redwood Foliage

These are the needles of a Redwood. I would have expected such huge trees to have large needles and cones in proportion to the size of the tree, but both are tiny. Most of the foliage is far out of reach as well, but this was photographed on a younger tree in the Simpson-Reed Grove in jedediah Smith State Park.

Our first day in California was spent among the Redwoods. We went directly to Jedediah Smith State Park and walked some of the trails there before taking a long drive through the park on Howland Hill Road, a one way gravel road that took us back to Crescent City. We did some hiking at various points along the road as well, including the Stout Grove trail and this photo was taken there.

No photo or description that I have ever seen does justice to the majesty and wonder of these trees. We spent several days exploring the Redwoods in northern California, an area we had visited before, but never tired of them.

Redwood Burls

Many of the Redwoods have massive burls on the trunk or at the base of the trunk and they are as fascinating as the trees themselves. This photo was taken along the Howland Hill Road in Jedediah Smith State Park near Crescent City, California.

Taken along the Redwoods Highway south of Crescent City, California. Along the coast the day was mostly cloudy and dull but where the road climbed a high headland we were above the fog and stopped along the highway and took these photos.

The day this photo was taken was mostly foggy and dull but driving south from Crescent City and climbing a high headland we came above the fog for a short distance. These Redwood snags were just visible in the remnants of the fog and the shafts of sunlight.

While in northern California we stayed in Crescent City but drove from there to the Redwoods in Jedediah Smith State Park and in Del Norte State Park. One of those days we drove south following the Redwoods Highway and though it was very foggy climbed above the fog at one point and stopped for these photos.
