Taken along the main road in Badlands National Park near Pinnacles Overlook.

This was the view as we hiked the Pinnacles trail in Big Bend National Park's Chisos Mountains. We were returning from the South Rim and had a steep drop back into the Chisos Basin and a long hike through the basin back to our car.

Our trail is just visible on the right of the photo, but would take us to the left past the Emory Peak trail and back down into the Chisos Basin.

This is an area of the Chisos Mountains known as the Pinnacles, the trail we were on also so named. We were returning through this area from the south rim of the Chisos Basin when this photo was taken.

On our longest hike in Big Bend National Park we hiked around fifteen miles with 2000 feet of elevation gain, the longest and most strenuous hike we did. Our destination was the south rim of the Chisos Basin and we hiked a loop, following the Laguna Meadow trail to the south rim and then the Boot Canyon and Pinnacles trails back. This was taken in Boot Canyon, one of the few places in the Chisos Mountains where standing water can be found.

Much of what looks like foliage in this tree is in fact Broad-leaf Mistletoe. The tree was photographed along the Boot Canyon trail in the Chisos Mountains of west Texas.

Hiking back from the south rim of the Chisos Mountains in Big Bend National Park we followed first the Boot Canyon trail and then the Pinnacles trail. This was the view to the north from the Pinnacles trail. We had hiked all day and were tired but still had about four miles to go. We were close to the beginning of the Emory Peak trail which went off to our left and went to the top of the peak. We did not follow that trail but began to meet emergency personnel who were on their way to the peak to rescue someone who had fallen and was injured.

We were on the Pinnacles trail in Big Bend National Park when this photo was taken. We were climbing but would soon descend steeply into the Chisos Basin.
