We were recently in southern California for a conference and on our way there we had some extra time and stopped at a state park, Fossil Dry Falls, a volcanic area through which a river with a waterfall once rain. The photo shows the old river bed and the water worn rocks just above what was once a waterfall. The Sierra Nevada is in the background.

Obsidian Boulders

We car camped a night at Obsidian Butte on the Salton Sea during our travels (we are now at Joshua Tree National Park). The place lives up to its name with obsidian (volcanic glass), often as huge boulders, everywhere. The result of this is that there is now limited room for sleeping, my wife having collected enough obsidian to furnish her own volcano. The water in the background is the Salton Sea, a sea formed in 1905 when the Colorado River overflowed and flooded the area.

Mount St. Helens is off to the left in this picture and the area shown is the area devastated by the collapse of the east side of the mountain and the mud and lava flows. The west end of Spirit Lake is barely visible in this shot, as it is still filled with the floating tree trunks that were blown into the lake by the eruption.

Devil'sTower is a landmark in the northeastern Wyoming that has been a national monument since 1906. It is in the Black Hills area of South Dakota and Wyoming and is an old volcanic intrusion. We visited it last summer on our way across country, but found it very busy due the presence of thousand of bikers in the area for the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2011/10/eastern-wyo...
