Known as Fuller's Teasels these are an invasive plant in our area, but it is difficult not to love their beautiful seed heads. These were photographed on a frosty morning near Clear Lake and not far from our home.

My attitude toward Teasels is a bit ambivalent. They are not a native plant and are very difficult to control (we have trouble keeping them out of our yard) but the seed heads are very beautiful both in flower and when dried. These were photographed on a frosty morning down by our lake.

Beautiful both in flower and when dead and dried these Teasel seed heads are nevertheless paart of an invasive and troublesome plant. We photographed them on a frosty morning near Clear Lake and just across the road from our home.

If I am not mistaken, this is Purple Loosestrife, an attractive but invasive plant. It was photographed at Bass River Recreation Area in Michigan.

This is Scotch Thistle, an invasive and troublesome plant here. There are areas of our yard where the grandchildren cannot play because of it and my wife has spent a great deal of time trying to eradicate it.

Spotted Knapweed

I've been away from Ipernity for over a week because we were busy redoing the outside of our house. Friday and Saturday, the 17th and 18th my son-in-law and I tore the old roofing off in preparation for my son (a contractor) and three of his crew coming. They started Monday, the 20th and put a new roof on and new siding Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, and finished with a new porch on Friday. In the meantime, my wife has been busy trying to eradicate some weeds from the lawn, both shown here. This is Spotted Knapweed, an invasive and a plant about which there is nothing good to be said. I have a lot of tolerance for "weeds" and other creatures considered to be pests but little for this and for the other plant shown, the Scottish Thistle.

A last picture, I think, from our excursion to Summer Lake. This is the Yellow Pitcher Plant, now established by the thousands on the floating bog and shores of the lake. If you look closely you can see a fly perched on the rim of the pitcher and one can only guess what happened to it, but that close to the opening it probably became a meal. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/09/carnivorous...

Epipactis helleborine

This is one of the native orchids that we go see in Larrabee State Park. The trail to Clayton Beach, a remote area of the park, follows a path through the woods, crosses a railroad track and includes a couple of scrambles down the rocks. This orchid is found above and below the tracks and along them. Epipactis helleborine, the Broad-leaved Helleborine, is not truly a native, but a European import first found in the US in 1878 that has spread all across the northern part of the country and of southern Canada. It is one of two Epipactis species in the Pacific Northwest, the other a true native. nativeorchidsofthepacificnorthwest.blogspot.com/2012/10/t...
