The Pileated Woodpecker is the largest of its kind in North America and is close in size to a crow. This one was working on a tree in Washington Park near Anacortes and really making the chips fly. This is the female. The male has a red stripe on its cheek.

The last time I was in Washington Park I not only saw a Pileated Woodpecker but managed to get pictures. It was so busy knocking chunks out of an old tree that it allowed me to get quite close. I should add that this is our largest woodpecker, a huge bird that is as big or larger than a crow. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2013/05/orchid-hunting-on-fidalgo-and-whidbey.html
