This is a common Dragonfly in our area, the Four-spotted Skimmer.

This dragonfly is the Four-spotted Skimmer, Libellula quadrimaculata. It is, as Sonja has pointed out, the state insect of Alaska. It was photographed along the Auke Nu trail above Juneau while we were hiking there.
