Anyone want to buy a yacht? The large yacht had a for sale sign on it. The photo was taken near Bellingham Bay in northwestern Washington.

We were in northwestern Washington recently and while there went for a walk in Zuanich Park along the waterfront. This is one of the few photos I took.

Last spring for the first time I hiked the Stimpson Family Nature Reserve near Bellingham, an 350 acre area of natural beauty donated to the city of Bellingham by the Stimpson family. There are six miles of trails and I hiked most of them. There was not much in bloom, but the old growth forest, beaver ponds and unspoiled nature made the hike worthwhile.

Taken on an orchid hunting trip in the area. Lake Padden is south of Bellingham in the Chuckanut Mountains and is a popular recreation area. The day was not very nice, the trails were muddy, but I found plenty of native orchids and enjoyed the few rays of sunshine that did break through. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2013/05/lake-padden-and-padden-ridge.html

Taken in Bellingham, Washington, in the harbor, on New Year's Day. One of the many fishing boats idle on the day, though there were several loading nets and getting ready to sail.

Located on the east side of Bellingham in Whatcom Falls Park, these lovely falls are only one of several cascades in the area. Whatcom Creek is also spanned here by a beautiful old sandstone bridge, visible in the picture and the park is laced with trails and also includes a fish hatchery.

Whatcom Falls is in a park in Bellingham, the next town south of where we live. While our daughter and son-in-law were here we decided that because the day was overcast we would try to get some time exposures of the falls, giving him the opportunity to practice with his new Nikon. By the time we arrived, however, the sun was out, making it much more difficult to get good time exposures. This was the best I was able to do. His photostream can be found at: www.flickr.com/photos/scott_n_rose/ This was tweaked in PSE much more than I would usually do. Because of the extreme contrast I lightened the shadows and darkened the highlights and increased the saturation very slightly. I also removed one badly blown highlight on the left side of the falls and very slightly cropped the photo at the top and on one side.

I was out for a little while today and took some shots of this unnamed cascade in the Chuckanut Mountains south of Bellingham. We had some dry weather for a change, though it was cool and cloudy. In fact we had the coldest April on record since the 1800's and twice our normal amount of rainfall, so any opportunity to get out is welcome. There wasn't much blooming yet in the way of wildflowers and I spent some time looking for places to take time exposures.

Whatcom Falls is in the city of Bellingham and is the site of a former hydroelectic plant. Now part of a city park the area is perfect for walking, relaxing and photography.
