Along the Trail

RHH
19 Mar 2013 1 269
This was one of the trails we hiked in the Greenwater area north of Mount Rainier National Park last summer. The lupines were in full bloom and it was a beautiful sunny day, but the sunlight and shadow made photography somewhat difficult. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/08/near-greenw...

Cascade in the Cascades

20 Mar 2013 234
This was a small cascade we stopped to photograph along the very rough forest service road we were driving in the Greenwater area last July. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/08/near-greenw...

Corallorhiza mertensiana fma. pallida

RHH
21 Mar 2013 1 288
Another of the orchids from our Greenwater hikes. This is the Western Coralroot, Corallorhiza mertensiana, and the pale form of that species. It is aptly named the Western Coralroot since it is only found west of the Rocky Mountains. It is leafless and without chlorophyll but variable in color, the stems ranging from grayish-white though yellow, tan, brown, pink and reddish-purple, and the flowers also coming in a range of colors and color combinations. The link below shows many of these different color forms and the picture one of the darkest forms. nativeorchidsofthepacificnorthwest.blogspot.com/2012/09/c...

Cypripedium fasciculatum

RHH
19 Mar 2013 283
This is the orchid we were searching for in the Greenwater area north or Mount Rainier, the Clustered or Brownie Lady's Slipper, one of our rarer orchids. We found other orchids as well, seven different species in all, but this was the star. The flowers shown are a very pale form, but there were very dark brownish-mahogany forms growing in the same area. nativeorchidsofthepacificnorthwest.blogspot.com/2012/08/b...

Mount Rainier

Last July we spent a day hiking and orchid hunting in the Greenwater area north of Mount Rainier. We drove many miles on a very rough forest service road, hiked two different trails, and found quite a number of native orchids in bloom, but one of the high points of the day was the hike that took us to a ridge where we had fabulous views of Rainier and the surrounding country. This is one of the photos we took there. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/08/near-greenw...

Platanthera stricta

RHH
19 Mar 2013 285
This, the Slender Bog Orchis, is another of the native orchids we saw while hiking in the Greenwater area to the north of Mount Rainier. The species is very common in our area, but I took the photo for the sake of the insect that was working the flowers, some sort of fly, and am hoping that it can be identified. nativeorchidsofthepacificnorthwest.blogspot.com/2011/03/s...

Piperia candida

RHH
19 Mar 2013 279
The Slender White Piperia can be a tall plant. The few stems of these we found along a forest service road in the Greenwater area were nearly three feet tall. They were also very difficult to photograph in the strong breeze that was blowing and we got only a few good pictures. These were one of ten native orchid species we found that day. nativeorchidsofthepacificnorthwest.blogspot.com/2012/08/t...

Early Morning Along the Trail

RHH
21 Mar 2013 266
My wife took this photo while we were hiking in the area of Mount Rainier. The little stream ran along the trail for quite a ways and she managed beautifully, I think, to capture the lush greenness of the area in which we were hiking, as well as the early morning light. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/08/near-greenw...

Cypripedium fasciculatum fma. purpureum

RHH
20 Mar 2013 2 364
The picture I posted earlier of this species was of a very pale form. This is one of the darker forms, sometimes referred to as forma purpureum. The color forms shade into each other and are usually found growing together. This example was photographed in the Greenwater area north of Mount Rainier. nativeorchidsofthepacificnorthwest.blogspot.com/2012/08/b...

Pinesap

RHH
22 Mar 2013 1 1 310
Pinesap plants are without chlorophyll, leafless, and live off decaying material in the soil. They are usually found on rather dark forest floors where little else is growing. These were photographed along a forest service road in the Cascades near Greenwater, Washington. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/08/near-greenw...

Listera banksiana

RHH
23 Mar 2013 1 267
This is another native orchid we found near Greenwater when hiking there last summer. Also known as Listera caurina, the Northwestern Twayblade is very common in our area and we seldom go on summer hikes in the mountains without seeing it. It's a small plant, usually a foot tall or less (30 cm) with rather insignificant half-inch (1 cm) flowers. The plant has two opposite leaves about half-way up the stem.

Small-flowered Paintbrush

RHH
20 Mar 2013 338
Mark Egger has identified this as the Small-flowered or Magenta Paintbrush, Castilleja parviflora var. oreopola, a variety found only in the area of Mount Rainier. We were intrigued by the deep reddish-purple color of the bracts, a color we had not seen before. Photographed along a forest service road in the Greenwater area north of Mount Rainier. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/08/near-greenw...

Glacier Lily

RHH
21 Mar 2013 275
One of our favorite spring wildflowers, it blooms at snow-melt time. At high elevations that can be mid to late summer, as in this case. This was a protected location and there was a lot of snow left as well as a lot of mosquitoes. The bugs and a strong breeze made photography difficult and meant that we did not stay very long to admire the flowers. The botanical name for this beauty is Erythronium grandiflorum. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/08/near-greenw...

Platanthera aquilonis in situ

RHH
22 Mar 2013 258
Platanthera aquilonis is the Northern Green Bog Orchis, one of a group of green Platantheras that are difficult to distinguish from each other and all of which have rather unremarkable flowers. These were growing in a very wet area along a Forest Service road in the Cascades near Greenwater. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/08/near-greenw...

Cypripedium fasciculatum fma. purpureum

RHH
23 Mar 2013 297
One more photo of this unique Cypripedium, this time showing some of the detail of the flowers. The Brownie or Clustered Lady's Slipper is the smallest by far of our native Cypripediums and also one of the rarest. The flowers are about an inch in size (2.5 cm) and the plant less than 12 inches tall. nativeorchidsofthepacificnorthwest.blogspot.com/2012/08/b...
