In February, 2020, we were traveling from Carlsbad and the Guadalupe Mountains in New Mexico to the Grand Canyon and drove past the entrance to Petrified Forest National Park. My wife, who loves rocks, wanted to stop. I wanted to get to the Grand Canyon but she prevailed and we spent part of day at Petrified Forest and were glad we had done so. There are petrified trees and parts of trees everywhere in the park. The photos I've posted were taken in the Crystal Forest area of the park and near the headquarters where we hiked the trails through the hills.

Yellowstone National Park has the largest petrified forest in the world, a forest covered by volcanic ash and debris thousands of years ago and now partially uncovered by erosion. Most of it can be seen only by doing some serious hiking, but there is one tree, shown here, that is accessible by auto. A short turn off from the upper loop east side of the main road leads to this tree trunk. It is surrounded by a fence, otherwise, of course, it would soon not be there, but is a wonderful example standing about twenty feet tall and showing the wood grain and bark of a tree.

This is the valley through which a short side road leads to one of the petrified trees that are actually quite common in Yellowstone, though this is the only one that is accessible by car. The tree itself is surrounded by a fence so that people don't chip away at it, but is a remnant of the forests that were buried by volcanic activity in the past.

This picture was taken at the place were Interstate 90 crosses the Columbia River and near the town of Vantage, Washington. The state park there is known for its vast amount of petrified wood, including whole logs, and for the many different kinds of trees that are found in a petrified state, around fifty different species, including the Ginko. It also boasts a collection of Indian petroglyphs rescued from the waters beneath, since the Columbia has been dammed a little below this point. Pictures of the petrified logs, of the petroglyphs and of the park and its area can be found here: ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2011/03/ginko-petri... .
