I was fascinated by the caps that each clump of needles wears until it is pushed off by the expanding growth.

These mushrooms, examples of the widespread species, Coprinus comatus, are known as Lawyer's Wigs, Shaggy Ink Caps or more commonly as Shaggy Mane mushrooms. They are edible when young and are even grown commercially in some places, but as they age they begin to "melt" as is evident from some of the individual plants in this photo.
