Photographed in the Geiser Conservatory at Manito City Park, Spokane, this is, I believe, Coelogyne mossiae. We went to Manito last week before running some errands and having lunch at a Korean restaurant.

Another orchid photographed at Geiser Conservatory in Manito City Park, Spokane. We visited the conservatory and wandered the park for a few hours last week before going for lunch to a Korean restaurant where I had Bibimbap and my wife Bulgogi.

This is the Palm House in the Belfast Botanic Gardens. It was closed, as were all the other buildings when I was there. Completed in 1840, it is one of the earliest curvilinear cast iron greenhouses in the world.

Flowers from the Gaiser Conservatory
24 Jun 2011 |
|
I do not remember the name of this plant. Usually I take photo of the name tag if there is one but either forgot in this case or there was not a visible tag with the plant. It is another example of what can be found at the Gaiser Conservatory in the Manito City Park, Spokane.
New Guinea Impatiens
Masdevallia rimarima-alba

|
This orchid species from Peru has been given its native name, rima-rima, which refers to its medicinal properties. It was photographed at the Muttart Conservatory in Edmonton, which we visited recently, not so much to see the conservatory, but to see the work of the Orchid Species Preservation Foundation. They are a volunteer group which will soon be celebrating its 20th anniversary, and which is dedicated to preserving many orchid species in cultivation. They have a huge collection of donated orchids grown in three different areas dedicated to cool, intermediate and warm growing species. They use some of the facilities at Muttart, but pay their own way there.

The Lace Flower is a Gesneriad from Costa Rica and Mexico. It is a favorite of ours in the Geiger Conservatory at Manito City Park, Spokane, a plant we photograph whenever it is in bloom. This photo was taken yesterday while on a visit to the park and conservatory.

Pocketbook Plant
20 Mar 2012 |

This is Calceolaria herbeohybrida, the pocketbook plant, often sold as a houseplant, but in my experience are not that easy to rebloom. This was photographed in the Geiger Conservatory at Manito City Park in Spokane on one of our frequent trips there.
