Again, this hawk was photographed near King's Canyon National Park and tentatively identified as a Red-tailed Hawk, though after looking again at the photos, I do not think it is that.

I had identified this as a Red-tailed Hawk but after looking at the photos again I do not think it is a Red-tail. I'll have to doing some searching later in the day and try to get a better ID. The bird was photographed near King's Canyon National Park in California. Later. After looking again, I'm inclined to identify this as a Ferruginous Hawk, Buteo regalis, and have changed the name on the photo. I am willing to be corrected, however, and hope someone knows better than I do.

Well named Fish Eagles, this adult Osprey had been fishing in Clear Lake nearby when the photo was taken.

Though the nest was far above us, these Western Osprey parents became agitated and flew around calling when we walked in the road under the nest. This one looked more threatening than was actually the case.

Here's a few more photos of the Ospreys (Fish Eagles) that were nesting near our home. They are gone now, though one of the young hung around the nest for weeks after the adults and other chick had left.

We've had a pair of Western Ospreys or Fish Hawks nesting not from our home since we live near a lake. They raised two chicks this year and when this photo was taken were trying to persuade the chicks to leave the nest. These are the adults, perched in a dead tree near the nest, calling to the chicks. One of the chicks finally did fly out of the nest while we were watching but the other did not, though both have left now.

The Western Osprey or Fish Hawk has a wing span of nearly six feet (72 cm). We live near a lake and have a pair of them nesting down the road from our home. The raised two chicks which have now left the nest but were still on the nest when this photo was taken.

The Western Osprey or Fish Hawk is a large raptor with a six foot wing span (72 cm). A pair of them nested not far from our house and raised two chicks. This is one of the chicks, nearly full grown, on the edge of the nest.

This is another photo of the Cooper's Hawk I posted some time ago. The feathers are from a quail it had taken as the quail were scurrying for cover from under the bird feeders. In the photo the hawk is sitting on the dead quail and very shortly after flew away with it.

A favorite spot for eagle watching in northwest Washington in late winter and early spring is along the Mosquito Lake Road where it crosses the Nooksack River. The eagle gather there to feed on the carcasses of the salmon that have spawned and died.

There's a story to go with this photo. We've recently put up bird feeders at our new home and we've had a flock of California Quail searching for food under the feeders. A few days ago they were scurrying back to cover and this hawk dropped out of the trees nearby and took one of them. In the photo some of the feathers of the quail are behind the hawk and he is sitting on the quail waiting for it to stop moving. When it did stop moving he flew away with it. The photo was taken from a window and so is not the best angle but with birds one takes what one can get.
