Frog Orchid

Also known as the Long-bracted Green Orchis, not nearly as nice a name as Frog Orchid, this species is very common in the Canadian Rockies and this example was photographed in Jasper National Park. Its common name probably comes from the resemblance of the lip to the back legs of a jumping frog, but a bit of imagination is needed to see it It's botanical name is Coeloglossum viride var. virescens.

This was another first for me on our trip to Edmonton last summer. While out orchid hunting with the friend mentioned in the previous post, I was also shown this unusual form of a common orchid by him. This is the Small Round-leaf Orchis but a rare form with a striped rather than a spotted lip, Amerorchis rotundifolia fma. lineata. The ordinary form, which grows in abundance in British Columbia and Alberta, is shown below. This is the orchid that is closely related, too, to the European genus, Orchis, the only North American species so closely related to that genus.

This is Amerorchis rotundifolia, the Small Round-leaf Orchis, not found in Washington but very common in British Columbia. These were photographed near Tete Jaune Cache but were well past their peak. We would see them again in Alberta in much better condition, but I thought I'd post these anyway. The species is only about six inches tall and is closely related to the European genus, Orchis, the only American species that is so closely related.

The green Platantheras are very hard to distinguish, but I believe the expanded tip of the lip on this plant is diagnostic. This was photographed in the glacial area below Robson Glacier, just north of the Berg Lake Camp.

Photographed near Lake Elizabeth in Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest in the area of Skykomish, Washington. Keys to the identification of this species are the inflated spur and yellowish lip. This was published in the April, 2011, issue of Orchids, the magazine of the American Orchid Society, in an article titled "Taking Aim."

This native orchid we saw and photographed for the first time in Jasper National Park in Alberta along the Maligne Lake Road. It is distinguished by its long lip, which looks a bit like a forked snake's tongue. nativeorchidsofthepacificnorthwest.blogspot.com/2011/07/c...

In Explore July 25, 2011, #353. Amerorchis rotundifolia, the Small Round-leaf Orchis, does not grow in Washington State. This plant was photographed in Mount Robson Provincial Park in British Columbia where it grows by the thousands. In the place where this plant was photographed it was impossible to take a step without crushing some of the plants. The photo was taken early in the morning when the flowers were covered with dew or rain from the night before. nativeorchidsofthepacificnorthwest.blogspot.com/2011/07/a...

In Explore July 29, 2011, #456. Had to post just one more picture of this lovely little orchid, photographed near Kinney Lake on the Berg Lake Trail in Mount Robson Provincial Park. This charming species is more closely related to European orchids than to most North American native orchids. nativeorchidsofthepacificnorthwest.blogspot.com/2011/07/a...

This is almost certainly Estes Rein Orchis, Platanthera x estesii, a natural hybrid of Platanthera dilatata and Platanthera stricta, photographed along the Yellowhead Highway in Mount Robson Provincial Park, British Columbia, on a recent trip to Edmonton to see family. This plant was growing in every wet, boggy area along the highway, and though common is nevertheless beautiful with its masses of greenish-white flowers. nativeorchidsofthepacificnorthwest.blogspot.com/2011/08/p...

Platanthera obtusata is rather common in some areas and not a very large plant, but beautiful up close. This was photographed on the Berg Lake Trail in Mount Robson Provincial Park, British Columbia. It grows and blooms in profusion in the woods on the east side of Kinney Lake. nativeorchidsofthepacificnorthwest.blogspot.com/2011/08/p...

This is another shot of the Tall White Northern Bog Orchis which we found in abundance at the top of the Old Blewett Road on the east side of the Cascades. It is sometimes referred to as the Bog Candle for obvious reasons. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/08/old-blewett...

Taken last summer on the Old Blewett Road on the east side of the Cascades, this is one of our native orchids, the Tall White Northern Bog Orchis. It is quite common but it fragrance and beautiful flwoers make it a welcome find anywhere. nativeorchidsofthepacificnorthwest.blogspot.com/2012/07/w...
