North Cascades Autumn Color
10 Oct 2012 |
|
|
This was taken on a recent hike in the Twin Lakes area of the North Cascades north of Mount Baker. We were hiking to the top of Winchester Mountain and looks down from the trail to the shoreline of the lower of the Twin Lakes and captures some of the amazing autumn color of the North Cascades as well. The color in this case is provided by wild blueberries which we also enjoyed (the bears enjoy them, too, but we did not see any bears on this hike).

The autumn color, especially of the blueberries, is spectacular in the North Cascades. This photo was taken looking back down the Winchester Mountain trail and to the east early in the morning just after sunrise.

Twin Lakes

Thought I would post one of son Edward's pictures from our hike in the Twin Lakes area of Mount Baker Wilderness. This picture, taken from the trail to the top of Winchester Mountain, is certainly worthy of being posted and is one of the best photos from our hike.
You can see in the picture our vehicle, our campsite between the two lakes and the road (gated) through Skagway Pass to the Lone Jack Mine, an active gold mine. We hiked down the road a ways one evening and found other evidences of mining activity in the area, including an old mine shaft. The photo also shows some of the autumn color in the mountains.

High Pass From Winchester Mountain
15 Oct 2012 |
|
This was taken looking down and to the north from the top of Winchester Mountain (6,500 feet). We had hiked the trail over High Pass to Pleiades Overlook the previous day. That trail is visible at the bottom of the picture and leads across the ridge of High Pass and up the mountain on the farther side of the pass. We also hiked down to the old abandoned Gargett Mine, the trail to which is visible in the basin in the center of the picture just above the shadows. The old mineshaft on the south flank of Mount Larrabee is in the trees that are visible just above the knob at the bottom of the picture.

Winchester Mountain Sunrise
16 Oct 2012 |
|
Taken on the trail to the top of Winchester Mountain from the area where we stopped to photograph the sunrise. I believe that the peak silhouetted by the rising sun is Big Bosom Butte, though I take no responsibility for the name. The main attraction was Mount Baker which we photographed endlessly in the light of the rising sun.
I have so many pictures to post that I am going to post several a day for a while. Please do not feel obligated to comment on them all. I know how much work it is to keep up with commenting on the photos of contacts and friends and neither expect nor wish to put my contacts to extra trouble.

Mount Baker Sunrise

Friday and Saturday, October 5 and 6, son Edward and I went on an overnight backpacking trip in the Twin Lakes area of the Cascades north of Mount Baker. We left early Friday morning and were on the trail by 7:30 am. We hiked that first day to the Pleiades Overlook on the shoulder of Mount Larrabee, a distance of eight miles round trip miles with an elevation gain of 1,845 feet. On the shoulder of Larrabee we were at an elevation of 6,740 feet and could see for miles over the North Cascades. On the south flank of Larrabee we also took a side trail and explored the old abandoned Gargett mine.
We camped that night at Twin Lakes and the following morning we got up before daybreak, had a quick breakfast hiked up the Winchester Mountain trail, another four miles round trip and an elevation gain of 1,310 feet to the top of the mountain (6,510 feet elevation) and the old fire lookout there. On the way up we stopped to photograph the sunrise on Mount Baker, which looms over the whole area and is the first peak to catch the light of the rising sun. We stayed for nearly an hour taking pictures before going on to the top of Winchester Peak with its breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains.

Moon over Winchester Mountain
25 Oct 2012 |
|
The sun was already up, and we were well along on our hike to the top of Winchester Mountain, but the moon was late in setting and I managed to get this half-way decent picture over the ridge ahead of us. We had to go around this rocky outcrop and through a narrow saddle to reach the west side of the mountain where the trail continued.

Winchester Mountain Trail

Taken from the trail not far from the top where the trail, having followed along the south side of Winchester Mountain, crosses a saddle and heads up the west side of the peak. The trailhead with cars parked there is visible near the lake. Our camp is also just visible above the reflections of the trees.

This was a part of our trail up Winchester Mountain and will likely be the last of the pictures I post from that hike. Thanks for looking, commenting and for being patient with so many pictures from one place.

Fire Lookout

This is the old fire lookout at the top of Winchester Mountain. It is now maintained as a place for hikers to stay overnight and when we were there early in the morning there were several people occupying it. Mount Baker is in the background.

The Border Peaks

Taken from the top of Winchester Mountain, the farthest Peak is Canadian Border Peak and the nearer is American Border Peak, both of them standing to the northwest of Mount Larrabee.

Morning on the Trail

The ridge in the distance is Pleiades Overlook and the photo was taken from the High Pass trail on the shoulder of Winchester Mountain. Our trail ended on the lower ridge at the knob just to the right of the tree line in the foreground.
