These photos of new growth on conifers were taken at Yaquina Head Natural Area in Oregon. I believe these are Sitka Spruce, a tree that in favored locations grows to be over 170 feet tall (52 m) but along the coast is often little more than a gnarled shrub.

While waiting for my wife to use the toilets at Marmot Campground near Berg Lake (Mount Robson Provincial Park in British Columbia) I took some photos of the new growth on these conifers. I have not, however, taken the time to identify then.

Taken while hiking with brother Tim near Austin Pass in the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, these are the needles, I believe, of a Mountain Hemlock.

I was fascinated by the caps that each clump of needles wears until it is pushed off by the expanding growth.

At least in the open areas we hiked on Manastash Ridge, the Ponderosa Pine was the only tree and they were scattered over the ridge. Most of our hike was in the sun, therefore, and I suffered some sunburn as a result.
