This was taken on the shore of Deception Pass near the Deception Pass Bridge. One can walk down to the shore below the bridge though the walk is rather steep. Deception Pass separates the north end of Whidbey Island from Fidalgo Island and is the only way Whidbey Island can be reached without a ferry. It is know for its strong currents. The pass was given its present name by George Vancouver in 1792 who gave it the name because failure to find it had lead him to believe that Whidbey Island was a peninsula. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/06/whidbey-isl...

Fern Frond

I am fascinated by the endless variety of ferns and fantastic shapes of the new fronds as they unfurl. Living here in Washington, we have plenty opportunity to see them and photograph them. This photo was taken on Hoypus Hill in Deception Pass State Park on a hike with my wife and while I was waiting for her to finish up with whatever she was photographing. I do not know, however, which fern this is and would appreciate an ID. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/06/whidbey-isl...

Cranberry Lake is part of Deception Pass State Park and is on Whidbey Island. Whidbey Island is separated from the mainland by Deception Pass, a channel, and the lake, a freshwater lake, is separated from the sea by little more than a few yards of beach. The whole area is beautiful and a popular tourist destination. This was taken on a overnight camping trip with 6-8th graders. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/09/deception-p...

Fire

Taken by a campfire while on a two-night camping trip last spring with a group of 6-8th graders at Deception Pass State Park on Whidbey Island. This was one of the few pictures of the fire that was good enough IMO to post. I'm fascinated by campfires, as I suppose everyone is, and always try to get pictures, but few of them turn out. I liked the simplicity of this picture as well as the pattern that the flames made climbing up a stick of wood.

I am not sure I have the ID correct on this, but trust that Mark will correct me if I am wrong. This was photographed at Goose Rock near Deception Pass. Goose Rock, on the south side of the pass, supports a unique flora and is noted for its granite balds. It is also a wonderful place for views of the San Juan Strait and Islands and of the north end of Whidbey Island. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/06/whidbey-isl...

Pacific Madrone

I've posted several pictures of this tree recently.. Here's another taken Tuesday from the top of Goose Rock. The tree gets much larger than this and this tree, still young, is just starting to develop the peeling back that is characteristic of the species. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2013/02/pass-island...
