Miner's Castle

Named for a group who were exploring the area for minerals in the 1770's, Miner's Castle is the most dramatic and beautiful point along the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. Pictured Rocks is on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan's Lake Superior shore and is best seen by boat. We did not have time for that, however, on our recent trip there and so these photos are all taken from the cliffs, one of the few places where the beautiful colored cliffs are visible from land. The first inset photo, a scanned slide taken in 1975, shows the changes in the formation which is now missing one of its towers which fell into the lake in 2006. That first inset photo was taken on our honeymoon nearly 45 years ago.

This is Miner's Castle, part of Michigan's Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore on Lake Superior. It is the only place where the cliffs can be seen from land but I've posted this photo along with one taken in 1975 to show the changes in the formation which is now missing one of its towers. There are other changes as well, where a path once lead along the cliff to the formation and out on to it, there are now boardwalks and fences and it is impossible and illegal to climb out on the castle, but this is the place as it now looks.

Taken on our honeymoon in 1975 (a scanned slide) it shows the changes that have taken place in the formation which is now missing one of its turrets. This photo hung on our wall for many years.

Log Slide Overlook

Traveling along the Lake Superior shore we made a number of stops including this overlook, known as Log Slide Overlook, where loggers used to drop the logs down a wooden chute on the dunes to be picked up on the beach and brought out to waiting ships. This is the south shore of Lake Superior in Michigan's Upper Peninsula and the view is to the west. This area is mostly steep dunes but further west turns to sheer cliffs known as Pictured Rocks. The lighthouse is the Au Sable Point Light and the whole area is part of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.

On our trip to Michigan's Upper Peninsula we went first to Tahquamenon Falls State Park and then on to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore along Lake Superior. Just east of the National Lakeshore we stopped at Sable Falls and walked the trail down to the falls, but photography was exceedingly difficult. The falls are in the forest and the sun was shining right down the narrow opening through the trees and on to the water. This an the inset photo were the best I was able to do.

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore lies on the south side of Lake Superior in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. After spending a good part of the day at Tahquamenon Falls State Park we went to the lakeshore and this was our first stop. We hiked through through the woods to an overlook for our first view of Lake Superior.
