The Shadow of Baker

This was taken early in the morning on the second day of our Mount Baker Climb. At this point we were still crossing and climbing Coleman Glacier and had been climbing for over an hour and half with the Black Buttes (see previous photo) on our right and Mount Baker ahead and to the east. When this picture was taken the sun was just coming up behind Mount Baker to the east (in the opposite direction from the picture). We were looking back west and taking pictures of the sunrise colors in the sky over Puget Sound and the San Juan Islands when this shot was taken. We did not recognize it at the time, but this is the shadow of Mount Baker being thrown many miles away on the western horizon by the rising sun. A friend who saw this picture pointed that out.

This was taken just a couple of hours ago from Oyster Dome in the Chuckanut Mountains and looks out over Puget Sound and the San Juan Islands. Son Edward, another friend and I are planning on climbing Mount Baker in a couple of weeks and decided to do the Oyster Dome trail this evening as part of our conditioning for the climb. We ended up going with a group that included my wife and number of other friends and did the seven mile round trip in a bit under four hours. We started at 6:00 and had to come down in the dark which seriously delayed us, but the sunset at the top made the difficulties of the descent worthwhile.

Western Coralroot (Corallorhiza mertensiana)

This was photographed on Whidbey Island near Deception Pass in the San Juan Islands. The Coralroots are saprophytes, leafless and without chlorophyll, relying on a symbiotic relation with a fungus for their sustenance. Because of this relationship they are impossible to cultivate.

Sunset at West Beach

I'll be posting some pictures from a camping trip we made with a school group last spring to the area of Deception Pass. I've posted a few pictures from that trip but have some more that I need to post and want to post because they remind me that spring and summer are coming again, though too slowly for me. This was taken at a beach near our campground.

Western Spotted Coralroot
23 Jan 2013 |
|
Found and photographed this in Deception Pass State Park last spring on a school camping trip. It reminds me of spring and of how eager I am to be out hiking again, but it is not a perfect picture. I was struggling with low light, a strong breeze and lenses that were fogging when I took the picture.
The Western Spotted Coralroot is Corallorhiza maculata var. occidentalis, and is distinguished from the more common form by the rounded lip. It is leafless and without chlorophyll and obtains its nutrients from rotting material in the soil via a symbiotic relation with a fungus.

Sare's Head is part of Sharpe Park and the Montgomery-Duban Headlands south of Anacortes, Washington, on Fidalgo Island. It is 110 acres and undeveloped, a wonderful place for wildflowers, wetland creatures, for very old Madrone trees and for some pleasant hiking. My wife and I have been there several times recently, the last time to see the Fairy Slippers in bloom.
