Also known as Indian Basket Grass, this plant is not a grass at all but belongs to the Asparagus family. It is known as Bear Grass because bears dig up and eat the lower part of the plant. It is known as basket grass because the tough fibrous leaves were used in weaving baskets by the native Americans.

Photographed in Jedediah Smith State Park along the Simpson-Reed Grove Trail, this is one of the few wildflowers we saw among the Redwoods. It is the Stoutleaf Iris, Iris tenax.
