This was the first part of the trail I took up the shoulder of Herman Peak before the trail dropped down again behind Herman Peak and Table Mountain to the Chain Lakes. The red bushes are blueberries, the yellow grasses are sedges, the orange bushes at the top of the photo are mountain ash. The blue of the blueberries can even be seen on the bushes at the right.

Usually the Sitka Mountain Ash are orange and red in autumn, but this one was a brilliant yellow which stood out vividly against the red of the blueberries. I stopped for this photo while hiking the Galena-Chain Lakes trail near Iceberg Lake.

Mountain Ash, wild Blueberries, and Sedges make most of the color in this photo which was taken on the way up to Heather Pass in the North Cascades.Further up the Larches would add their own bright yellow to the mix.

Food for the bears and for hikers.

Taken on our recent hike to Cascade Pass and Sahale Arm, this photo was shot from the steep trail up to the top of the Arm and looking south over Pelton Basin to Pelton Peak (on the left) and Magic Mountain. The reds and oranges in the foreground are the autumn colors of the mountain foliage, especially of the blueberries which were at their peak of ripeness and were being avidly sought by the black bears. On the way down from the arm we saw three adults and one cub, several of them on the trail below us and had to make sure that we did not run into any of them. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/09/cascade-pas...

This was taken on a recent hike in the Twin Lakes area of the North Cascades north of Mount Baker. We were hiking to the top of Winchester Mountain and looks down from the trail to the shoreline of the lower of the Twin Lakes and captures some of the amazing autumn color of the North Cascades as well. The autumn color, especially of the blueberries, is spectacular in the North Cascades.
