Last spring we were in Utah with our oldest daughter and visited Arches and Canyonlands National Parks. In the Needles District of Canyonlands we did an all-day hike through the area of Lost Canyon. We hiked a total of about ten miles through canyons, up and over ridges, and around formations such as this. It was, we all agreed, the best hike we had done in the park.

When in the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park last spring, we hiked the Lost Canyon trail, a marvelous trek trough canyons, over and around these strange formations and through endless beautiful scenery.

Our favorite hike in the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park was the hike to and through Lost Canyon. There was water in the canyon, a rarity in the area and the hike along that part of the canyon was cool and refreshing. We are home again after driving through the night and all morning yesterday, a drive of over 1000 miles (1700 km) from Colorado. The last few weeks we put over 5000 miles on our car, but were able to see many family members.

The rock formations in Lost Canyon in Canyonlands National Park were no more amazing than the formations elsewhere, but hiking through the canyon one was down among the formations instead of above them.

Would not want to be hiking here when it was raining, though that does not happen often. Our trail through Lost Canyon took us down this dry watercourse.

Lost Canyon in Canyonlands National Park was one of the few places where we saw water, a stream flowing through part of the canyon. The Colorado and Green Rivers also flow through the area, butt are not easily accessible. The rest of the area is desert.

The Peekaboo Trail was part of our hike to lost Canyon. How it got its name I do not know, but it was a beautiful hike through canyons and over and around sandstone formations.

This Claret-cup Cactus was photographed in Lost Canyon in the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park, Utah, while hiking there with my wife and oldest daughter. These beautiful cacti are native to the American southwest and are found in several varieties there. I've included in the inserts a photo of the plant and a photo, taken by my wife, of myself photographing the plant and flowers.

Here is a Sagebbrush Lizard, a rather common lizard all across the west. This one was photographed along the Lost Canyon trail in Canyonlands National Park, Utah.

In the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park we hiked the Lost Canyon trail, a total of about 9 miles with a lot of climbing up and down out of canyons. In one of the canyons there was a stream that still had water in it, shown here. The inset shows my wife climbing down a ladder into one of the canyons.
