This is the narrow gap through which all the water that falls in the Chisos Basin exits. The Chisos Basin lies in the Chisos Mountains of Big Bend National Park and is one of the most popular parts of the park. We hiked the narrow canyon that leads to the Window when in Big Bend earlier in the year, something that can be done only when it is dry. We did not get close enough to get photos from the edge of the gap since the area is somewhat dangerous, but beyond the gap is a sheer cliff down which the water falls.

The Window Trail in Big Bend National Park is in the Chisos Mountains and takes one to the narrow gap through which all the water that falls in the Chisos Basin drains. We hiked the trail the last day of stay in Big Bend.

The Window Trail leads to the pour-off for the Chisos Basin in Big Bend National Park. In the dry season the narrow canyon can be hiked and is not as difficult as that may look in this photo.

This is a view of the Window, a gap in the surrounding walls of the Chisos Basin in Big Bend National Park. All the water from the basin flows out through this gap and over a cliff. Later in our stay we would hike to the Window, but on this occasion we were hiking to the south rim of the Chisos Basin, an all-day hike. The photo also includes examples of Sotol, a common desert plant, and of Engelmann's Prickly Pear.

The Window is the outlet for all the water that collects in the Chisos Basin. This view of the Window is from the Laguna Meadow trail which we hiked the first full day of our stay in Big Bend National Park. The last day of our stay there we would return and hike to the Window.
