We had intended to do several hikes in the Guadalupe Mountains of west Texas including an overnight backpack to the top of Guadalupe Peak, but were forced by the weather to change our plans. The first day there we went north into New Mexico and visited Carlsbad Caverns. The second day we hiked the McKittrick Canyon trail to McKittrick Ridge and the Notch. This photo was taken on the first part of that hike. The weather was overcast and threatening rain on our way in but cleared by the time we reached the Notch and we had a very pleasant, even very warm hike back out. The first part of the McKittrick Canyon hike follows an old road to the Pratt Cabin, a summer home built in the 1930's in the canyon by a Texas oilman and geologist, Wallace Pratt. At that time the canyon was privately owned but was later donated by the Pratt family to the National Park Service. The cabin is still standing and is used by the Park Service as a kind of museum and visitors' center. There is history of the cabin on the Park Service's website here: www.nps.gov/gumo/learn/historyculture/prattcabin.htm .

When in Texas earlier in the year we spent a few days in the Guadalupe Mountains and hiked the McKittrick Canyon trail. This was the trail lower down as it followed an old road to the Pratt Cabin. The day started out cool and cloudy and so it was difficult to get good photos.
