Photographed near Santa Elena Canyon in Big Bend National Park, this bird is a Pyrrhuloxia, a relative of the more brightly colored Cardinal.

Similar to a Cardinal (its song is indistinguishable) but much less colorful is the Pyrrhuloxia, this one perched on a Prickly Pear Cactus. We photographed this female in Santa Elena Canyon in Big Bend National Park.
