After visiting the Homer Wilson Ranch in big Bend National Park, we drove on to the Sotol Vista Overlook where we stopped for a few photos. The view is south Mexico is visible in the background. We were following the Ross Maxwell Scenis Drive, visible on the right of the photo and our destination was the Santa Elena Canyon, visible as a notch in the first inset. The next day we would go kayaking on the Rio Grande into Santa Elena Canyon on the border between the USA and Mexico. The second and third insets are from the Homer Wilson Ranch and the last inset is of the sign at this viewpoint, a sign which gives information about the Sotol plant, identifies the peaks in the distance and explains the view.

This view is from Sotol Vista Overlook in Big Bend National Park. We had stopped there as we traveled south on the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive. We were headed for the area of the notch in the ridge in the background. The notch is Santa Elena Canyon, where we kayaked and hiked the next day. The canyon is the canyon through which the Rio Grande flows and is the border between the USA and Mexico.

The plant in the foreground is Ocotillo, a kind of cactus. We had hoped to catch them in bloom but were a bit too early. This example was photographed near the Homer Wilson Ranch in Big Bend National Park.
